What’s in My Camera Bag?

Making sure your camera bag contains all of the right gear that is essential for a successful shoot.

After all, you don’t want to miss out on a great shot because of missing equipment or have a shot compromised due to lack of comfort.

What you take in your bag is limited by the size of it, and your choice of equipment will vary depending on your exact shooting plans. So before you set off it’s important to plan carefully what you need to bring. You may find it helpful to keep a list, for example on your phone, to remind you of what you’ll need to pack before leaving.

I must admit that if I am only going to photograph one train I’ll usually just take my camera and lens. If, however, I intend to be out for a few hours I’ll take my camera bag.

Chances are, at some point shooting on location, you will have forgotten something that you wish you had brought. Do what you can to reduce that from happening again!

There are a few things every photographer should keep in his or her camera bag. Check out my list to make sure you’re not forgetting something important!

Here is what’s in my camera bag when I take it out for railway photography.

Camera Bag

I have had this Lowepro Nova 5 camera bag for over 20 years. I am still happy to use it.

1. Canon 5D Mark III

2. Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

3. Canon EF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 IS USM Lens

4. Lens Cleaning Cloths

5. Plastic bag – to sit on

6. Pad and Pen

7. Spare Memory Card

8. UV Filter

9. Canon Instruction Book

10. Very Small Torch

11. Camera Waterproof Cover

12. Battery

13. Camera/Lens Cleaning Brush

14. Garden Scissors

It is worth purchasing a durable bag that will fit everything you need to take without being too bulky to carry around. A waterproofed bag is a smart move, so you don’t get caught out by adverse weather conditions.

This photo shows my camera bag and all the items that I have in it.

Backpack

Sometimes I take a backpack instead of my camera bag.

Why?

Well, in this bag I can add the following extra things.

1. Bottle of water

2. Food

3. Jacket

4. Small Umbrella

Just like with a camera bag, choose something with enough storage space, isn’t too bulky and is protected against the weather.

Conclusion

Based on my personal experience, these are the most important items to include in your camera bag for railway photography.
